Written by: Unknown (some believe Ezra)
Chapters:42

Why Do Christians Have Trials?
1. To glorify God Dan 3:16-18, 24-25
2. To Discipline for known sin Heb 12:5-11; James 4:17 Rom 14:23; 1 John 1:9
3. To prevent us from falling into sin 1 Pet 4:1-2
4. To keep us from Pride 2 Cor 12:7-10Paul kept from pride by his “thorn in the flesh.” Gal 4:15; 6:11
5. To build faith 1 Pet 1:6-7
6. To cause growth Rom 5:3-5
7. To teach obedience and discipline Acts 9:15-16; Phil 4:11-13
8. To equip us to comfort others 2 Cor 1:3-4
9. To prove the reality of Christ in us 2 Cor 4:7-11
10. For testimony to the angels Job 1:8; Eph 3:8-11; 1 Pet 1:12

Job is designed to establish the divine viewpoint.

Job's Friends

11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

  • Eliphaz > Based on his observation and experience = "Job suffers because he sinned"
  • Bildad  > Rests on tradition = "Job is a hypocrite"
  • Zophar > Rests on assumptions of orthodox dogma = "Job is a wicked man"

All 3 of these views had too narrow of a viewpoint of God's providence.

CHAPTER 32
  • Elihu  >  An intercessor rather than a judge

Has a higher view of God

Mediator between God and Man

33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me. (KJV)

33 If only there were a mediator between us,
someone who could bring us together.
34 The mediator could make God stop beating me,
and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment.
35 Then I could speak to him without fear,
but I cannot do that in my own strength.  (NLT)

I find it so neat how this passages in Job fit perfectly with that in 1 Timothy

1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)
 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

1 Timothy 2:5 (NLT)
For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.
