  From Status, to Servant

Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ isLord, to the glory of God the Father. (NKJV)

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  (KJV)
Instead He emptied Himself
by assuming the form of a slave,
taking on the likeness of men.
And when He had come as a man
in His external form,  (HCSB)

Emptied......Voluntarily laid aside the full use of His attributes

John 1:14  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

ἐκένωσεν - properly, to empty out, render void; be emptied – hence, without recognition, perceived as valueless.

I like the use of the word ἐκένωσεν (kenoó): "to empty" here in this passage, It makes me think of a can of soda when it is full it cannot be crushed by the average person, but once what is inside is poured out the can can be crushed. Jesus "emptied" Himself of His deity to the point where he could be crushed according to the will of The Father.

Guilt/Sin offering
Leviticus 4:34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar.

Isaiah 53:10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

So we are to have the mind of Christ, not focused on status that you are a child of His so roll out the red carpet, rather because you are a child of His you will serve to further His kingdom.

One other thing I fond recently in this passage that I had never realized before is that in the first two points mentioned in Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13 where satan tempted Jesus they are directed to him not emptying Himself, satan wanted Jesus to "fill himself up again". Then in the last of the 3 mentioned satan reverses his tactic by useing "since you are not going to take on your status, then acknowledge my status".

1. If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread
2. If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down
3. All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Just because 3 temptations are recorded does not mean that that was all. The bible says he was tempted in every way as we are tempted. So I beleve there were more
