I remember till this day that this was one of the first books that my mother taught out of when I first went into youth (while living in Caracaraí, RR [Brazil] ). My mother taught for a short while the youth Sunday School. Great Lesson, Great Memories.
Key Figures in this letter to Philemon
Paul
Philemon
Onesimus (A runaway slave of Philemon)
Onesimus ran away from his master Philemon and ended up with Paul in (prison? not sure how Onesimus path crossed Paul's).
Paul leads Onesimus to Christ, Then writes letter back to Onesimus' master which is Paul's good friend. And the main flow of this letter is about Paul asking Philemon to accept Onesimus back as a brother in Christ.
There are several other people mentioned in this book/letter, and it is noteworthy to study deeper down those paths if you would like.
